Round 1, November 11th Eccentrics vs Northerners

The Eccentrics had never before played in a match that had points awarded.

We played at our home ground against the Northerners who were the top side last season and have been around for 6 years in a competition that is being revived (now up to 7 teams) after being a 2-division competition in the 70s and 80s during which time notables such as Ian Botham played on a regular basis.

The Northerners certainly boasted recent Premier 1st and 2nd grade players.

We had our own international in James Wookey backpacking his way around the world after study and good standard cricket in England. James batted, bowled, wicket-kept (and subbed for other mob) – most of the time without a hat ! He will play the next 2 games before heading home for Christmas although he will come back if we make the finals in March !!

Our star player (despite some late internal run-outs) was Will Stibbs who carried his bat to be 80no in a team total of 147. Will also bowled a tight line for 0/7 off 4.

Chris Neagle debuted also and made 33 in a second-wicket partnership with Will of 68.

The other mob were 0/15 after 6 balls and 1/15 after 7 when Shahid Afridi’s cousin, Haighanie was dismissed for 14 caught at slip off the bowling of fiesty chef and fast bowler Aaron Turner who provided the umpire with plenty of advice throughout the afternoon as well.

In the end the Northerners made the runs with about 17 overs to spare. Luckily we batted first or we may have been chasing 400 !
